# Opening Inventory Report

<p class="doc-lead">Shows the stock position of each item at the start of a chosen period — the opening quantity (and optional value) carried into the date range. Use it to establish opening balances for a period.</p>

<h2 id="overview">Overview</h2>

Go to <b>Inventory → Inventory Reports → Opening Inventory Report</b>.

<p><b>What it shows.</b> One row per item with its code, unit, item group and the opening quantity for the selected period. Turn on <b>Show Value</b> to add the opening stock value. A total quantity (and total value) is shown at the bottom. Click a row to open the item's transaction history for the period.</p>

<p><b>When to use it.</b> Use it at the start of a month, quarter, or financial year to confirm the stock brought forward, and for period-on-period stock reconciliation.</p>

<li><b>Finance / inventory controller</b> — What stock was carried into this period and what was it worth? Set the date range and turn on <b>Show Value</b>.</li>
<li><b>Auditor</b> — Do opening balances match closing balances of the previous period? Compare against the prior period's report.</li>
<li><b>Store manager</b> — How much of each item did we start the month with? Generate for the month start.</li>
<li><b>Category manager</b> — What were the opening balances for a brand or center? Use the <b>Brand</b> and <b>Center</b> advanced filters.</li>

<p><b>What is the "opening" quantity?</b><br>The stock held for each item at the start of the selected date range — the balance brought forward into the period.</p>

<p><b>How do I see opening values, not just quantities?</b><br>Turn on <b>Show Value</b>. A <b>Total Value</b> column and a total are added.</p>

<p><b>How does this differ from the Stock Report?</b><br>The <a href="#/inventory/reports/stock-report">Stock Report</a> shows the current position across centers, while this report shows the balance at the start of a chosen period.</p>

<p><b>How do I see what made up an item's opening balance?</b><br>Click the item to open its <a href="#/inventory/reports/item-transactions">Item Transactions</a> for the period.</p>

<p><b>Which opening entries are included?</b><br>Approved and closed opening inventory entries as of the start of the selected range.</p>

<p><b>Why is my report empty?</b><br>No opening balances exist for items at the start date, or filters exclude all rows.</p>

<p><b>How is this different from Opening Inventory screen?</b><br>The <a href="#/inventory/opening-inventory">Opening Inventory</a> document loads go-live balances; this report summarizes opening qty by item for analysis.</p>
